Taupō 2022

The 4th Annual Māori Youth Leadership Summit took place on August 23rd, 2022, at the Great Lake Centre in Taupo.

This initiative aimed to cultivate the next generation of leaders in the Bay of Plenty by providing a robust platform to explore leadership, pathways, innovation, and enterprise, fostering a sustainable future for our region. Themed "Harnessing our Tools to Navigate Te Ao Hurihuri," the summit gathered Year 11, 12, and 13 rangatahi Māori from 8 schools across the Bay of Plenty for inspiring guest speaker sessions and interactive kaupapa Māori 'Design Thinking' workshops focused on Life Skills, Leadership, and Wellness.

With the support of strategic partner Te Puni Kōkiri, our Toi Kai Rawa Team facilitated opportunities for rangatahi to discover and cultivate their talents, fostering collaboration and meaningful pathways through engaging discussions, solution-building, and networking.

The summit also featured insightful presentations from inspirational figures such as Moresby Kainuku, Rocket Lab's Integrated Launch Engineer, known for his groundbreaking achievements in the commercial aerospace industry, Miss Kihi "Native Diva," a multi-talented entrepreneur and youth mentor, and Delani Brown, a master in the art of carving whakairo, whose work carries a profound message of cultural storytelling and tradition. Through their stories and expertise, attendees were inspired to embrace their potential and pursue excellence in their endeavors.

Tāneatua 2021

Over 140 students from 22 schools across the Waiariki Region convened in Taneātua for this year’s Leadership Summit, focusing on sustainability through a Māori worldview. Rangatahi had the privilege of hearing from four distinguished leaders who shared their journeys and passions in Te Taiao (The Natural World), Te Ao Torangapū (The political realm), Te Ao Hangarau (Technology), and Te Auahatanga (Innovation/Creativity).

Guest speakers, including Te Kuru Dewes, Waimirirangi Ormsby, Jack Tai Poa, and Nikki Kennedy, presented challenges for rangatahi to tackle, inspiring them to seek solutions. Divided into groups, participants utilized a Design Thinking approach learned from the Kia Mau Team, drawing on the attributes of Māui to unlock innovative solutions. Through collaboration and creativity, rangatahi rose to the challenge, presenting their ideas to the audience with enthusiasm and determination. As Ariana Poihipi-Black from Te Wharekura o Mauao reflects, these initiatives provide invaluable opportunities for rangatahi to expand their horizons and contribute positively to their communities.

Rotorua 2019

Te Arawa waka, Te Arawa tangata, and Ngāti Whakaue extended a warm welcome to our guests who traveled from as far as Ōpōtiki to Tūrangi and from Katikati in the Western Bay of Plenty to join us for the annual Māori Youth Leadership Summit at the Rotorua Events Centre in March 2019.

During the summit, over 140 rangatahi from 21 schools had the privilege of hearing from five esteemed speakers, each a leader in their respective fields. These inspirational individuals included Kendall Flutey, Potaua Biasiny-Tule, Lee Timutimu, Ngawiki Ormsby, and Te Mauri Kingi. Divided into teams of six and guided by the foundations of the Design Thinking approach using Kia Mau Talent’s Māui framework, participants engaged in tackling key problem statements, informed by a rangatahi Māori survey.

At the conclusion of the summit, teams presented their innovative solutions to the entire audience, showcasing the remarkable creativity and dedication of our rangatahi.
